Recycling your waste materials in Biggleswade

Recycling is something most of us do now to some degree. Some do it more than others, but we mostly appreciate that it is an important part of our daily lives. It is more important to recycle waste in Bedfordshire in order to conserve resources and maintain a healthy environment than ever before. The question is, are we really doing everything possible when it comes to recycling our waste materials? The achances are that many of us are probably not doing all we can. So here are a few tips to help you recycle properly.

The first point is probably the one that most fall down on and that is a failure to rinse out all containers such as bottles and jars before they go into the recycling container. We know that glass and most plastic bottles can now be recycled, but many of them will be rejected if they are contaminated with food waste. The same applies to the lowly pizza box; although it is made from card, it should not go into the recycling bin because the grease can contaminate many other items, this will mean that many of your rinsed out containers will be rejected when they reach the processing facility. So when recycling is rejected it will simply end its life in landfill instead. Entire batches sometimes will not be used because food waste is mixed in with the paper and cardboard, what a waste!.

Kitchen foil and some other products such as chocolate are often wrapped in foil. Sadly, many do not recycle this foil, they just throw it in the bin. If it is clean and dry, screw it up and put it in your recycling bin with other aluminium items such as drinks and food cans. Flattening the cans will give you more space in the bin, and it will not affect its ability to be recycled. You can even buy can presses for a few pounds online. They can be screwed to the wall and make light work of compacting your cans.

Recycling bathroom rubbish in Biggleswade

The bathroom is a room that many overlook for recycling. Now, this may be because it is such a small room, but if you have the space for a recycling bin as well as a rubbish bin, then you really should consider it. It is surprising just how many deodorant and shampoo bottles a family generate, not to mention the conditioner and liquid soap bottles that can be recycled. As for any bottle or container that has a pump, remove that first as they cannot be recycled.

A safety consideration is needed with aerosol cans, such as hairspray or deodorant, these can be recycled too. Unlike the other metal containers, do not squash them, as they still may have some propellant gases present. Just put them in with the rest of the recycling.

One product that many are now turning away from is the coffee pods that are used with different types of coffee machines. Although these have increased in popularity in recent years, the environmental impact of them is know starting to filter down, no pun intended! started to be reported. These pods cannot be thrown in the recycling bin, although some manufacturers are now offering a recycling service. All you need to do is contact the company who supply your pods to ask if they recycle and if they do, they can send you a recycling bag.

Do not put batteries and light bulbs into Biggleswade recycling bins, as these can be dropped off at a designated collection point which can be found at a lot of supermarkets. Please remember that batteries will not be collected as part of your household recycling, and should never go into landfill waste bags. This is because many of them have dangerous chemicals that are harmful to the environment if they leach into the soil or ground water.

Many fabrics can be recycled too. Not many people realise that old worn out clothing that is not good enough for the charity shop can be recycled instead. The chances are that your local council probably offers a collection service for old worn out clothes.

Much like washing the inside of containers out before recycling, before you recycle them you should try to remove the labels that are stuck on the outside containers too, as these are often not recyclable. Some can simply be peeled off, but others may need to be soaked in water first before they come off.

Also you must not put your recycling into a black bin bag and then into the recycling bin. Most councils will refuse to collect these, as the black bags cannot be recycled as they are deemed to be soft plastics. All the items should be washed inside and labels removed and placed loose within the bin.

Hoarding costs you money

Many hoarding behaviours can be put down to past experiences the individual has gone through. This may be periods of abject poverty, that makes them feel the need to hoard items just in case they could be used to good effect at a later stage. It is now thought that hoarding can adversely affect your finances. This may sound like a strange statement to make, but a bad financial situation is something we all want to avoid.

The waste consequences of Covid

In an age where we are constantly looking for ways to cut down on our waste, it seems strange that so much extra waste has been created by the covid pandemic.
