Biggleswade Skip Hire sends all waste from Sandy back to our primary recycling plant in Stevenage.

No matter what the weather is like, unwanted waste accumulates in and around our properties all year round. It seems to be getting more of a stressful chore to take these items down to the local household waste recycling centre these days. We repeatedly hear tales of people being turned away as the centre do not handle the type of waste they want to dispose of, or even if they will take it, the time it takes to do the trip to the dump is simply too long.

Although Sandy is only a small market town, there are no less than nineteen highly rated places to eat situated there. There are a good selection of pubs, traditional English and Indian restaurants, fish and chip shops and pizza places to choose from.

Let's face it, you really don't want to be spending your precious weekend or annual leave time waiting in line at a recycling centre. There are plenty of better ways to spend your time in and around the Sandy area, so why not hire a skip from Biggleswade Skip Hire and let us deal with the disposal of your household waste.

A little Sandy history

An archaeological dig back in 2006 suggested that some Sandy ancestors may date back even further than 250 BC, showing that this part of Bedfordshire has been inhabited for a very long time.

Sandy itself was originally an important Roman settlement and was most likely a trading centre and staging post throughout the Roman era. There was an ancient hill fort, which is now a heavily wooded area that is known as "Caesar's Camp" although today it is more commonly called "the sand hills" or "the lookout" and it still overlooks Sandy to this day.

Sandy is also referred to in the Domesday Book, as Sandeia. This derives from the Old English Sandieg, which translates to a sand-island. In 1086 Sandy was listed in the Domesday Book as being held by Eudo Fitzhubert, who is likely to have been the land tenant. He was probably also known as Eudo the Dapifer. He was a High Steward for William the Conqueror, and was based in Colchester Castle.

In addition to this, Sandy had two mills listed in the ancient records, and both of these would have been powered by water. There are still references to one of the mills in the road name "Mill Lane" which runs along the river Ivel, however the mill is no longer there and has since been replaced by housing. Further down the river Ivel from the site where the mill once stood is Sandye Place Academy where it is believed there was a Danish camp which was built to protect Danelaw in the year 886.

Evidence at The Riddy, a local nature reserve just to the south of Sandy, shows that mill building has been conducted on this site since at least the time of the Norman era, though the last mill was built here in about 1857.

Sandy is probably best known today as the headquarters of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, (RSPB). They moved to The Lodge, on the outskirts of Sandy back in 1961. The Shuttleworth Collection is also about 2 miles south west of Sandy and is is a world famous aeronautical and automotive museum situated at the Old Warden Aerodrome. The collection is one of the most prestigious in the world owing to the variety of old and well preserved historic aircraft.
